Life Span Growth and Development- Final Reflective Writing

Writing
I remember when I enrolled Life Span Growth and development. I remember thinking what could I learn about human growth and development that I didn’t already know. I mean I have had and raised two children. Looking back over everything I learned this semester I can admit with quite certainty that I did not know a lot. Studying human development helps you to better understand yourself. Where you come from and where you are going in the future. By understanding the aging process I can become better prepared when I face issues associated with growing older. It helps me learn more about my children. I learned for example that I can expect my children to show opposition to authority in their teenage years or that younger children can have difficulties relating to and making friends with other peers in their same age group. I saw that some of the things I worry about are normal age related issues that most children face. In addition to learning things that can help me to be a better parent I gained a greater insight to how my children learn, think and feel. I have also gained insight when it comes to how to interact with other children. When you can see how children grow and develop you also have a better understanding of what inspires them to think and act the way they do. This knowledge has defiantly given me a certain level of comfort that was not there previously when it comes to working, talking and playing with them. In my future career as a nurse I will need to possess the skills needed to relate to and understand children in order to feel empathy and provide an excellent level of care when they are sick or hurt.
When we think about human development it’s easy to think that the whole process ends once you reach life as an adult. It is important to realize that developing is ongoing throughout a person’s whole life. When you become an adult, pass through middle age, and face old age you have to have an understanding of how people grow and change in order to successfully manage all the stages of you r life. It is also important to study human growth and development in an effort to have a better understanding of what is “normal.” Every person is different than others in many ways but human development tends to follow a pretty predictable pattern. Once you have studied this you have a greater understanding and appreciation for what is typical at certain ages and in what particular stages. Knowing makes it easier to see possible signs of trouble. Either physical or psychological development in early childhood to emotional and physical struggles that present much later in life the ability to recognize what could be potential problems can be vital. The old saying “the sooner the better” really rings true.
I particularly enjoyed the section on middle age. I am currently middle aged and I found it very helpful and fascinating to read and learn about the types of things people my age are confronting. Things such as a different phase of your relationship with your spouse, uncertainty as to if you made the right decisions in life that brought you to this point, as well as physical and emotional changes taking place within your body. It was comforting to read that many people my same age are dealing with the same or similar issues. I enjoyed the virtual life activities. It was interesting to see that if you made different choices concerning your virtual child that you have made or are currently making with your own real child how surprisingly different the outcome could be.
I learned a lot in the discussions with other class mates. I appreciated the conversations they had about their own virtual child and how we all learned from each other’s experiences. I can honestly say that I really enjoyed this class.
